Virtual Event

The way we are taught history makes it feel abstract and distant. Photos purposely in black and white and the same narrative of the same activists give us a narrow space to navigate our nuanced history.

About the event

Bob’s young adult years were spent traveling the South with the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), advocating for equality and equity against the constricting laws and policies of Jim Crow. Being the first white Field Secretary for a Black outfit like SNCC meant you stood out, which caused the FBI to take notice.

This can be an abstract idea that law enforcement is meant to uphold the law, and this session asks us what the cost to the individuals working towards a just and equitable society is.

For this session of Conversations With, Bob discusses his experiences living under surveillance, what some of those interactions were like, how that affected his everyday life and the future he carved for himself.
