It’s nearly impossible to find a genre of music that doesn’t originate from Black people. Blues, jazz, and gospel are front of mind, but what about rock ‘n’ roll? Surprise! Black people invented that too. Let's uplift Black Music Month and dive into a pioneering rockstar ahead of her time.

About the event
“This world does not move without Black creativity.” — Melissa Kimble
It would be quite the task to find a genre of music that doesn’t originate from Black people. Even genres that are marketed towards white audiences like country and rock ‘n’ roll. Did you know that Hound Dog is not an original track from Elvis? In fact, he stole it from a Black woman, her name is Big Mama Thornton. Did you also know that some of rock’s greatest names were heavily influenced and shaped by Black musicians? So much so, the Rolling Stones named their group after one of bluesman Muddy Waters’ most famous tracks. (Seriously, go look it up.) Join us as we uplift Black Music Month by taking a closer look at a pioneer of rock ‘n’ roll; the openly queer, guitar slaying, trailblazing Sister Rosetta Tharpe.
