About the event
Black History Month’s theme for this year is African Americans and the Arts; an exploration of Black folks’ expansive contributions in their many forms. For this session, we’re going to look at a beloved artist who was invited into the planning rooms of the Civil Rights Movement, then devastatingly broke trust. Ernest Withers was a Black photojournalist with an eye for capturing some of the most intimate moments of the Civil Rights Movement and Black life. There's a catch, though—allegedly Ernest was an informant for the FBI. Was he or wasn’t he? We aren’t 100% sure. This story is a curious one with no “right” answer or ending, but it does beg the question, how do our individual choices impact our community at large?
